Diane Benoit du Rey

Diane Benoit du Rey was born in 1989. She trained at the Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin (HEAR Strasbourg) and after graduating she moved to Paris where she has been living and working since 2015. She has done two painting residencies, at the Plessix-Madeuc in Brittany and at EFA Gallery in New-York which allowed her to develop her work. She won the 1st Paliss'art Prize in 2016, participated in the November Painting Prize in Vitry in 2017, and was part of the inaugural exhibition of the Fiminco Foundation in Romainville last autumn.

Returning to the very essence of painting, she combines line and color in a ballet where these two founding elements complement each other without enclosing themselves. Questioning the city-object, these works underline the idea of the "neutral" city, the concept of urbanity, and what has characterized it for centuries.

For these charcoal works, she worked only from memory, without models or photographs, questioning the passage of time, memory, and the trace they leave even in the most flourishing cities.

For her oil paintings, Diane worked from photographs of ruins taken during her travels. Playing between a black and white treatment of the painting as a first step and colorization by glaze in a second phase, the artist voluntarily puts forward the universal character of these spaces between architecture, sculpture, and scenography.
